This award was open to architects working in the field of urban design and on the design of hard or soft landscaping in urban environments. It recognises architects working on the strategic distribution of buildings and infrastructure, as well as the design of hard and soft landscaping.
Among other things, the judges will be looking for evidence of all-round design excellence and fitness for purpose over a body of work. The size of the projects featured will not be a factor in their deliberations.
Masterplanning & Public Realm Architect of the Year 2013 Winner:
A belief that the built environment should be clear and logical and where spaces suit their purpose is the driver for the practice as is the idea that it’s the sensual characteristics of material and craft, light and shade that contribute to users’ interpretation and memories of a place. These factors give places their identities – human-scaled with a sense of belonging and community.
The judges said: “In Eastside City Park, Patel Taylor has completed Birmingham’s first new park for over a century – a project that is already proving a vital catalyst in enabling the city’s wider regeneration. The linear park has been elegantly conceived both as a route and as a series of episodic spatial experiences to which the surrounding development can respond.”
