The Architect of the Year Awards took place on the 15th November at The Brewery, London. The awards recognised and celebrated the best architectural projects of the year across 16 categories. Take a look below at this year’s well deserved winners!

The Schueco Gold Award is presented annually to the practice that BD’s editor deems to have made the most significant contribution to British architecture over the past year. The practice is selected from the winners in 12 of the Architect of the Year categories.

The Young Architect of the Year Award is an award dedicated to celebrating architectural projects from new talent aged 40 years and under.

Education Architect of the Year (Nursery to Secondary) Sponsored by Butler and Young
WINNER: Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture.
Krishna-Avanti Primary School in Harrow was the first voluntary aided Hindu
School in the UK. The architecture reflects the Hindu community, whilst being
a state of the art educational environment and a sustainable building with an
integrated engineering approach that provides a low impact, energy-efficient
solution. The project has one of the highest BREEAM scores for a UK school.

Education Architect of the Year (6th Form to University)Sponsored by Armstrong
WINNER: Stanton Williams
The University of Cambridge Botanic Garden was originally laid out by
John Henslow, Darwin’s tutor and mentor, as a research tool. Stanton Williams’
Sainsbury Laboratory is rooted in its setting with the intention to make it feel
as though the garden itself is the place of research. There are two storeys
visible above ground and a further subterranean level.

Hotel Architect of the Year - Sponsored by UNITE Modular Solutions
WINNER: ReardonSmith Architects
The Savoy has reopened after a £220 million hotel refurbishment in London.
ReardonSmith led the design team in a programme that included the restoration,
rebuilding or redesign of all guestrooms and public areas, the introduction of an
entirely new services infrastructure and the structural stabilisation of the listed
riverfront facade.

Housing Architect of the Year – Sponsored by Duravit
WINNER: Karakusevic Carson Architects
Claredale Street housing by Karakusevic Carson Architects in Bethnal Green
occupies a site bounded by Keeling House, the 1960s grade II listed tower by
Denys Lasdun, the Mansford Estate to the west and warehouse and mansion
buildings fronting Mansford Street. The scheme provides 77 new homes of
mixed tenure, 40 of which are new affordable family homes.

David Archer Architects’ project for the Busaba Thai restaurant chain at Bicester
Retail Village created a 9m-high space with a mezzanine level overlooking the
main dining hall. Interior elements include ceiling-hung lanterns and fans and
Thai lattice screens.

WINNER: East architecture, landscape, urban design
East’s urban design study for Farringdon provides coordinated improvements
to this historical area of London including new Crossrail stations and associated
development.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands provided the masterplan for Derwent London’s
Gresse Street and Rathbone Place properties, developing the sites over time

The Round Tower, a grade II-listed folly that had been reduced to ruin, has been
restored and developed into a four-bedroom private house by De Matos Ryan.
Located on the crest of a hill overlooking Siddington Village, Gloucestershire,
the house features a substantial underground extension.

Henley Halebrown Rorrison’s Junction Arts & Civic Centre for Goole, east
Yorkshire, opened in November 2009. It integrates a 173-person auditorium,

A team featuring muf, landscape architect J&L Gibbons and architect collective
EXYZT transformed abandoned railway land into an urban garden in Hackney.
The project was part of a wider initiative called Making Space in Dalston and includes
a barn, rainwater storage and furniture made in community workshops on site.

At the heart of Bennetts Associates’ transformation of the Royal Shakespeare
and Swan theatres is a new 1000-seat thrust-stage auditorium. The complex’s
relationship with the town of Stratford-upon-Avon has been reinvigorated by
the creation of the tower, new external spaces and routes.

WINNER: Hopkins Architects
One of the four permanent venues on the Olympic Park, Hopkins’ Velodrome
provides a venue for the indoor track cycling events at the London 2012 Olympic
and Paralympic Games. The building seeks to form an elegant response to the
brief using simple materials in an efficient manner.
